We get it. Taking in your car for a windscreen replacement (Perth) seems like a hassle. It takes an hour or so out of your schedule, and you’re probably busy enough without worrying about it.

Of course, we all know you’re going to bring it in for repair or replacement sooner or later. The risk of it shattering due to some unforeseen event on the road is just too great. You don’t want shards of glass flying at you as you drive, after all.

With that in mind, we sometimes get one unpleasant question. How long can you drive safely if your windscreen is cracked?

How Did The Damage Get There

Let’s look at how you got that crack in the first place as a starting point.

It’s probably debris that collided with the glass as you were driving. Flying stones are also a possibility. In most cases, this will be a tiny thing. Trivial, in many respects, if an annoyance on a cosmetic level. At least, that’s how it can look if you’re not an expert.

It is ill-advised to drive with a cracked, chipped, or otherwise compromised windscreen. There are so many potential consequences should the damage escalate. Some of these might even be fatal.

Why Fix It Fast

One issue is the obstruction. If the damage limits your vision or view, you want to replace the windscreen as soon as you can. Anything that impedes visibility should be corrected right away, really.

Now, even if the crack is small, you should keep in mind that you still need to fix things. Cracks and chips have a tendency to get bigger, and in a manner that is hard to predict.

Sometimes, you’ll find that soft impact can cause a small crack to shatter the whole pane. On the other hand, there are instances when a large and hard impact on an already large, spider-web like damage, the windscreen would remain intact somehow.

The unpredictability is going to make it hard to predict things. Since you can’t guess what you’re going to run into or what might harm the glass, it’s best to get a replacement fast.

We’d also like to note that modern windscreens are very robust, durable things. The glass isn’t just a single pane, but actually, two of them that are laminated and bound by an adhesive. This creates an incredible degree of durability and stability.

This design doesn’t mean the windscreen is impossible to break. We all know that’s not true. However, it makes it much harder to break than normal.
